After meetings with COICA, Stand.earth, and RAISG, Colombia’s Minister of the Environment, Susana Muhamad, has now announced Colombia’s embrace of the push to protect 80% of Amazonia by 2025. Initially endorsed by the IUCN in 2021, Amazonia for Life: Protect 80% by 2025 is a scientifically verified approach to protecting Amazonia, and is supported by Amazonia’s largest Indigenous federation, Coordinator of the Indigenous Organizations of the Amazon Basin (COICA)

During the “Diálagos Amazónicos,” Minister Muhamad announced Colombia’s position, heard here between 2:40 and 3:00. A subsequent press release from the ministry also called for integrating the preservation of 80% of the Amazon by 2025 into the declaration of the countries of the Amazon Cooperation Treaty Organization (ACTO).
